Background of the Study

Sleep hygiene refers to behaviors and environmental factors that promote quality sleep, which is essential for physical and mental well-being. Psychiatric patients often experience disrupted sleep patterns due to the interplay between mental health conditions and sleep disorders (Adetunji et al., 2023). Poor sleep hygiene can exacerbate psychiatric symptoms, impair cognitive function, and hinder recovery.

At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, the importance of sleep hygiene in psychiatric care is increasingly recognized. However, there is limited empirical data on the sleep hygiene practices of psychiatric patients in Nigeria. Understanding these practices can guide interventions to improve sleep quality and overall mental health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Disrupted sleep is a common but underdiagnosed issue among psychiatric patients, contributing to the persistence and severity of mental health conditions. Despite its significance, sleep hygiene is often overlooked in psychiatric treatment plans at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

The lack of data on the sleep hygiene practices of psychiatric patients limits the development of targeted interventions to improve sleep quality and mental health outcomes. This study evaluates the sleep hygiene practices of psychiatric patients, identifying gaps and recommending strategies to enhance care.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the sleep hygiene practices of psychiatric patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta.

2. To examine the relationship between sleep hygiene practices and psychiatric symptoms.

3. To recommend interventions for improving sleep hygiene among psychiatric patients.

Research Questions

1. What are the sleep hygiene practices of psychiatric patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta?

2. How do sleep hygiene practices influence psychiatric symptoms?

3. What interventions can improve sleep hygiene among psychiatric patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Psychiatric patients at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, exhibit varying sleep hygiene practices.

2. Poor sleep hygiene practices are associated with increased psychiatric symptoms.

3. Interventions targeting sleep hygiene significantly improve mental health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on psychiatric patients receiving care at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, between 2023 and 2025. Data will be collected through patient interviews, sleep assessments, and clinical records. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported sleep practices and the difficulty of isolating sleep hygiene as a standalone factor.

Definitions of Terms
